How Credit-Card Minimum Payments Work

Minimum payments can fall as the balance falls, which may stretch repayment over a long period if you only pay the minimum.

Interest takes part of the payment

Interest and any charges are applied according to the account terms. Only the remainder reduces the balance.

A fixed higher payment changes the maths

If affordable, paying a fixed amount above the required minimum can reduce the balance faster. The exact effect depends on APR, fees and future transactions.

Stop adding new spending to the example

Repayment calculators usually assume no new borrowing. Real-world results change if you keep spending on the card or the rate changes.
