Things Around Your House You Can Sell for Cash

A room-by-room checklist for finding saleable items, pricing them realistically and selling safely.

A room-by-room checklist for finding saleable items, pricing them realistically and selling safely.

Start with items that are easy to describe

Phones, tablets, games consoles, tools, small appliances, branded clothing, furniture, collectibles, books in sets and unused hobby equipment are easier to sell when buyers can quickly understand condition and specifications.

Check drawers and cupboards

Old phones, cables, headphones, cameras, watches, unopened gifts and unused kitchen equipment often sit out of sight. Check that devices are yours to sell and remove personal data before listing.

Look at children’s and hobby items

Outgrown equipment, toys, instruments, sports gear and craft supplies can have resale value if complete and in usable condition.

Price from evidence

Search for the same or genuinely similar item and, where possible, look at completed sales rather than asking prices. Condition, accessories, collection location and postage all affect value.

Choose the marketplace to suit the item

Local collection can make sense for bulky furniture; specialist or national marketplaces may suit smaller items with a wider buyer base. Compare fees, seller protection and payout rules before listing.

Photograph faults as well as strengths

Clear photos and an accurate description reduce disputes. Mention scratches, missing parts, battery issues or other material defects rather than hoping the buyer will not notice.

Stay safe

Use the platform’s payment and messaging systems where possible. Be cautious about overpayment stories, requests for codes, fake courier links and buyers trying to move you to unfamiliar payment methods.

Selling possessions is different from trading

Occasionally selling your own unwanted belongings is not the same as buying or making goods to sell for profit. If selling becomes regular trading activity, check HMRC guidance and keep records.

Give the cash a job

Decide before the sale whether the money is for an urgent bill, debt, emergency savings or another goal. One-off sale proceeds should not be mistaken for recurring monthly income.

A 30-minute selling sweep

  • Choose one room and make three piles: sell, donate and keep.
  • Prioritise items worth enough to justify photographing, listing, messaging and postage.
  • Clean items, gather accessories and record model numbers before listing.
  • Set a deadline: if a low-value item does not sell after a reasonable attempt, consider donating or recycling it.

Common questions

What should I sell first?

Start with recognisable items in good condition that are easy to photograph and post or collect.

Should I accept payment outside the platform?

Moving away from a marketplace’s normal payment system can remove protections and is a common feature of scams. Follow the platform’s current safety guidance.
