DEALS & REWARDS

How Refer-a-Friend Offers Work — and the Traps to Watch For

Referral rewards can be useful, but only when the product is right without the reward. Here is what both sides should check.

Referral rewards can be useful, but only when the product is right without the reward. Here is what both sides should check.

What a referral offer is

A company rewards an existing customer, the new customer, or both when a new person signs up through a referral route and meets stated conditions.

Start with the product, not the bonus

Ask whether you would choose the service at its normal price and terms. A £20 reward does not make an unsuitable subscription, expensive contract or poor service good value.

Read the qualifying conditions

Offers may require a minimum spend, a first order, a completed trial, a particular plan or a waiting period. Check whether refunds, cancellations or existing accounts make the referral invalid.

Watch for subscription traps

ASA/CAP guidance says subscription promotions must make ongoing payment commitments and other significant conditions clear. Check what happens after any free or discounted period.

Do not pressure friends

A referral is still a recommendation carrying your personal trust. Share it only when it is relevant and be clear that you may receive a benefit.

Referral links can have limits

Programmes may ban public posting, paid advertising, self-referrals or use on voucher sites. Breaking the terms can void rewards or close an account.

Keep rewards separate from the decision

Compare the normal price, cancellation terms and alternatives first. Then treat the referral reward as a possible extra.

How we will handle referral offers

If SaveAndMakeMoney ever benefits from a referral or affiliate link, we will identify the commercial relationship near the relevant link rather than hide it in general site wording.

Referral checklist

  • Read the current terms before sharing the link.
  • Tell the other person if you receive a reward.
  • Check the product’s normal price and cancellation terms independently of the reward.
  • Do not create multiple accounts or use self-referrals unless the programme explicitly allows it.

Common questions

Is a referral reward guaranteed?

No. It normally depends on tracking and the new customer completing all qualifying steps.

Should I post my referral code everywhere?

Not automatically. Some programmes restrict public promotion, and indiscriminate posting can be spammy or breach the terms.
