A framework for judging sign-up bonuses, introductory deals and switching rewards without chasing the headline number.
A bonus is not free money in isolation
A reward normally comes with conditions: spending, switching, deposits, a minimum term or an ongoing subscription. Calculate what you must do and what it could cost before valuing the bonus.
Compare the normal product first
Would you still choose the product if the bonus disappeared? If not, the incentive may be distracting you from a higher price, unsuitable features or a commitment you do not need.
Calculate the net benefit
Subtract fees, required spending you would not otherwise make, delivery costs, lost discounts elsewhere and the cost of keeping a service for the qualifying period.
Check timing
Some bonuses are paid quickly; others require several billing cycles or validation. Do not rely on a future bonus for an urgent bill.
Understand cancellation and clawback
Check whether cancelling, returning an order or downgrading causes the reward to be withheld or reclaimed.
Be especially careful with financial products
Bank accounts, credit and investments can involve regulatory and suitability considerations beyond the size of an incentive. Our general Deals content should not turn a bonus into a recommendation to take a financial product.
Keep evidence
Save the offer terms and confirmation from the day you sign up. Promotions change, and a screenshot or email can help if the published terms later move.
Use a simple rule
If the product makes sense without the bonus and you can meet the conditions without changing sensible behaviour, the bonus may be a useful extra. If the bonus is the only reason to sign up, reconsider.

A quick bonus calculation
- Write down the headline reward.
- Subtract unavoidable fees or extra spending caused by the offer.
- Note how long your money or account must remain committed.
- Compare the same product without the bonus and at least one sensible alternative.
Common questions
Are sign-up bonuses taxable?
Tax treatment depends on the nature of the reward and your circumstances. For material or recurring rewards, check current HMRC guidance or get appropriate tax advice.
Why do we avoid a permanent “best bonuses” table?
Offers change quickly. A dated, verified Deals listing is safer than an evergreen article pretending a temporary promotion is still current.
