Workplace Pension Matching

Your employer may pay more when you contribute more — but the exact rules depend on your scheme.

Start with the minimum rules

For qualifying auto-enrolment schemes, minimum total contributions are usually 8% of qualifying earnings, typically including at least 3% from the employer. The way contributions are calculated varies by scheme.

Then check whether your employer offers more

Some employers will increase their contribution when you increase yours, up to a stated limit. If your scheme offers matching, understand the maximum match before deciding your contribution level.

Do not look at percentages in isolation

Check which earnings the percentage applies to, whether salary sacrifice is available, charges and investment options. Increasing pension contributions also reduces money available today, so affordability matters.

Why matching can be powerful

An extra employer contribution adds money to your retirement pot that you would not receive as ordinary take-home pay under the same scheme terms. The pension remains invested and its value can rise or fall.
