The useful number is money left after costs, together with all the hours it took. Demand and results vary; earning nothing during a test is possible.
Why survey averages are not a personal forecast
Finder’s survey, updated 29 January 2026, reports 46% of UK adults have an income-earning side hustle and an average £872 a month. It also reports only 39% of people with side hustles earn more than £20 a week. That is a reason to inspect the earnings distribution rather than assume the headline average describes a beginner.
Read Finder’s survey and methodology. Different surveys may include different activities, dates and respondents, and may report revenue rather than profit. Do not average incompatible figures together. None establishes what you will earn.
Worked examples: count every hour
These are hypothetical arithmetic examples, not typical earnings, available jobs or market-rate claims.
| Test | Receipts | Costs | All time | Left before tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two service jobs | £80 | £12 | 5 hours, including admin/travel | £68; £13.60/hour |
| Small online selling test | £120 | £75 stock/fees/postage | 6 hours, including listings | £45; £7.50/hour |
| Paid research task | £20 | £0 | 2 hours, including screening/waiting | £20; £10/hour |
These hourly figures are comparisons, not employment pay rates. Actual work may involve minimum-wage rights depending on employment status. Tax, loan repayments and benefit effects can further reduce the amount you retain. Unsold stock and unpaid invoices also tie up cash.
Run a four-week test
- Pick one activity that fits your skills and available time.
- Set a maximum spend you can afford to lose; prefer using what you own.
- Record money actually received, costs and all hours, including finding customers.
- Keep one-off sales of possessions separate from repeatable trading income.
- Review whether the result is worth continuing, changing or stopping.
If £160 is received and £40 spent over 12 hours, the result is £120 before tax, or £10 per hour. A future month might differ; do not add this to your essential-bills budget until income is dependable.
Check the practical constraints
Check employer rules, insurance, licences, platform conditions and tax obligations where relevant. Never pay a stranger an upfront fee to unlock promised earnings. Selling unused possessions can raise one-off cash, but does not prove a sustainable business.
