Is selling on Vinted worth it?

It can be worth it for items likely to sell for enough to justify the work. Count the time spent photographing, listing, answering messages, packing and dropping off parcels, including time spent on listings that never sell.

The episode compares two hypothetical sales that each take 25 minutes. A £3 sale works out at £7.20 an hour before costs, while a £30 sale works out at £72 an hour before costs. Neither figure accounts for unsold listings or guarantees a sale. Start with a few promising items and track what you actually keep after costs.

Is this item worth listing?

Estimate what you’d keep if the item sells, and what that works out to per hour of your time.

This estimate assumes the item sells and excludes tax. Your figures are calculated in your browser.

Start with unwanted belongings

Clothes, electronics, furniture, games, books and hobby equipment can all have resale value. Clean the item, photograph flaws clearly and describe condition accurately.

Vinted

Vinted is commonly associated with clothing and related second-hand items. Check its current permitted-item rules, fees and shipping process before listing because marketplace terms can change.

eBay

eBay can suit a broad range of items and gives access to a large audience. Compare sold listings—not optimistic asking prices—to estimate demand. Check current seller fees and postage rules before setting a price.

Facebook Marketplace

Local collection can make bulky items easier to sell. Meet safely, avoid unusual payment links and never hand over an item because a stranger shows you a screenshot claiming payment was made. Verify money through your own account.

Price for net proceeds

Consider platform charges, postage, packaging and the value of your time. A higher headline selling price does not always mean more money in your pocket.

Personal possessions versus trading

HMRC says people are unlikely to owe tax simply because they sell ordinary personal possessions from home. Buying or making items with the intention of selling them for profit can instead amount to trading. Online platforms may also have reporting obligations; that reporting does not automatically mean you owe tax.

Listing formula: clear title + honest condition + useful measurements + several good photos + realistic price + safe payment/delivery method.

Selling on Vinted as a reseller: what changes?

Selling your own unwanted clothes is different from regularly buying stock to resell for profit. Before trying Vinted reselling, check which items the platform permits, its current commercial-selling rules, the cost of stock and postage, refunds or returns, and how long listings take. Track unsold stock as well as completed sales. Buying goods specifically to resell may be trading for UK tax purposes; see current HMRC guidance rather than assuming platform reporting thresholds are tax-free allowances.
