Weekend Side Hustles in the UK

Use weekends for work that benefits from longer blocks of time, local demand or customers who are also free on Saturdays and Sundays.

Choose around your actual weekend

Decide how many hours you can sustainably give up. A side hustle that consumes every weekend can become expensive in energy, childcare, travel and lost recovery time.

Local service ideas

Dog walking, pet visits, gardening, cleaning, basic home organising, car washing and event help can suit weekend demand. Check insurance, licences or local rules where relevant and never advertise skills you are not qualified to provide.

Skill-based work

Tutoring, photography, editing, design, bookkeeping support, admin and freelance digital work can fit into a three- or four-hour block. Start with a defined deliverable rather than an open-ended promise.

Selling and reselling

Listing your own unwanted belongings can generate one-off cash. Buying stock specifically to resell is different: it introduces trading risk, fees, returns and potential tax obligations. Track purchase cost and net profit, not just sales.

Calculate the real hourly return

Subtract travel, platform fees, supplies and other direct costs, then divide the remaining amount by all time spent. This makes very different ideas comparable.

Tax and records

HMRC says qualifying trading income can fall within a £1,000 annual trading allowance, but rules depend on your circumstances. Keep records of income and costs and check current HMRC guidance if your activity grows.

Compare three ideas: expected money − direct costs ÷ total hours. Then add a separate score for how likely you are to keep doing it.
